Native to sunny, open lowlands.This extremely variable

 species is the most commonly grown of the true cold-hardy

 fountain grasses.Narrow, green leaves form an arching mound.

Seed heads are green in summer, becoming golden-brown in autumn,

 resembling foxtails.
